The Best Rattan Pendant Lights for a Coastal Home: Weave, Size and Where to Hang Them, From $72

The best rattan pendant for most coastal rooms is a tightly woven shade around 16 to 24 inches across, hung where its patterned shadows can fall on a white ceiling and wall. Serena & Lily's Santa Barbara pendant, $195 in black or natural, is the one I would buy first. On a budget, IKEA's KAPPELAND white rattan pendant, $71.99, is a lovely surprise, and IKEA's LERAN comes in a large 60 cm size for a dining table. Here is the full list, and how to keep rattan looking good in humid air.

Why Rattan Belongs Near the Water

Rattan is a climbing palm, light and flexible, and it has been woven into furniture and lampshades in hot, humid places for a very long time. In a coastal house, a rattan pendant does what a solid shade cannot: it lets light through the weave, so the shade glows from within and throws a soft pattern across the ceiling and walls. In the evening, that pattern is half the reason to buy one. It is also one of the easiest ways to bring a natural texture into a white kitchen or dining room, as I did in our whitewashed kitchen with rattan pendants.

Open Weave or Tight Weave?

  • Open weave throws dramatic shadows and lets more light out, but you can see the bulb. Great over a dining table on a dimmer.
  • Tight weave hides the bulb and gives a softer, more even glow. Better over a kitchen island, where people look up at it while working.

If you like an open weave but not the bare bulb, a frosted globe bulb inside softens it, or a shade with a glass or linen inner diffuser, which I wrote about in glass, rattan or linen pendant shades.

What I Compared

  • Size against the table, island or room.
  • Weave and colour, natural, white or black.
  • What is included: some rattan pendants are shades only, without cord or bulb.
  • Price from brand pages or roundups checked on October 14, 2026.

The Picks

1. Serena & Lily Santa Barbara Pendant: Best Overall

$195 in one roundup · black or natural · larger 26 in round version also sold

The Santa Barbara is one of the best-known rattan pendants in coastal kitchens, and one design roundup lists it at $195 in black or natural. Natural is the classic, warm and honey-toned. Black gives a sharper outline that works well in a kitchen with black hardware. Serena & Lily also sells a 26 inch Santa Barbara Round, which I would look at for a large dining table; check its current price on their site.

Coastal note: a pair over an island, or three in a row over a long table, is where these look their best.

2. IKEA KAPPELAND / HAVSDJUP: Best Budget White Rattan

$71.99 on IKEA US · white rattan · 17 3/4 in

IKEA's KAPPELAND shade on the HAVSDJUP cord set is a white rattan pendant at $71.99, listed at 17 3/4 inches. White rattan is less common than natural and it looks wonderful in a very pale room, where natural rattan can feel a little heavy. At this price you can hang two over an island for less than one designer pendant.

3. IKEA LERAN: Best Large Size for the Money

29 cm and 60 cm diameters · from about $69 to $149 in a roundup

LERAN is a natural rattan pendant in two sizes, 29 cm (about 11.5 inches) and 60 cm (about 23.5 inches). A roundup listed it from about $69 to $149 depending on size; check IKEA's current price. The 60 cm size is the one I would use over a round dining table, where a big, airy shade looks generous rather than heavy. IKEA also makes the SANDKORN shade in handmade black rattan at 45 cm, though I only found prices for it outside the US.

4. Four-Tier Rattan Pendant: Best Statement

$589 at Powered by People · 22 in diameter at the bottom, 11 in at the top · bulb and cord not included

A tiered rattan pendant, four stacked rings, gives a layered glow and a lot of presence. Powered by People lists one at $589, 22 inches across at the bottom and 11 at the top. Note that bulb and cord are not included, so add a cord set to the budget. It suits a double-height entry or a big open living room.

5. Firefly Rattan Pendant: The European Pick

€229 at Colonel Shop, per a Gardenista roundup · 16 in

The Firefly is a 16 inch rattan pendant sold by Colonel Shop at €229. It is a softer, rounder shape than most, and a good choice if you want something less commonly seen.

Sizing and Height

  • Over an island: two or three shades of 14 to 18 inches, with the bottom about 30 to 36 inches above the counter.
  • Over a dining table: one shade about half to two thirds the table width, 30 to 34 inches above the top.
  • In an entry or living room: at least 7 feet clear underneath in walkways.

Rattan looks lighter than it is in photos. A shade that seems small online often looks right in the room, so do not oversize. My spacing for coastal pendants is in pendant lights that feel coastal.

Bulbs for Rattan

Use a warm 2700K bulb, around 800 lumens for a working light. Inside an open weave, a frosted globe bulb keeps you from seeing a bright point through the gaps. Keep the wattage within the shade's limit; LED bulbs run cool, which is safer next to natural fibre.

Rattan and Humidity

Rattan handles humid air well, but it does not like extremes. In a Charleston summer, a few things keep it looking good:

  • Dust it with a soft brush or the brush attachment of a vacuum every month or so.
  • Do not hang it where it gets wet, such as over a sink right next to an open window in the rain.
  • Keep it out of direct, harsh sun, which can bleach and dry the fibres.
  • If it gets dusty or sticky from kitchen grease, wipe it with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Natural, white or black? Natural rattan warms a white room. White rattan keeps a pale room airy. Black rattan gives a crisp outline and suits black hardware.

Is the cord included? Several rattan pendants are sold as shades only. Check whether you need a separate cord set and canopy.

Hardwired or plug-in? Most rattan pendants hang from a ceiling box, but a shade on a plug-in cord set, like IKEA's, can hang from a hook and run to an outlet, which is useful in a rental.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Going too big over an island. Two medium shades usually look better than one huge one, and they light the counter more evenly.
  • Hanging too high. Rattan pendants hung high look like they are floating away. Bring them down to 30 to 36 inches above the counter.
  • A bright bare bulb in an open weave. You will see a hot spot through the gaps. Use a frosted globe.
  • Too much rattan. A rattan pendant, rattan chairs, a rattan mirror and a rattan lamp in one room is a lot. Two or three rattan pieces per room is plenty.

Rattan Indoors and on the Porch

Natural rattan is an indoor material. On a deep, covered porch it can work for a while, but humidity, wind-driven rain and sun will age it fast. For a porch, look for outdoor-rated woven pendants made from synthetic fibres, which look similar from a distance and stand up to the weather. Indoors, in a dining room or kitchen, natural rattan will last for years with a little care.

A Coastal Kitchen Plan

For a kitchen with a 6 to 7 foot island: two natural rattan pendants about 16 to 18 inches across, hung 30 to 36 inches above the counter and about 30 inches apart, on a dimmer, with recessed or flush lights for overall light. In a dining room off the kitchen, one larger rattan shade over the table ties the two rooms together.

The Short Version

Choose a tightly woven rattan shade for working areas and an open weave for dining, sized so it looks generous but not heavy. Serena & Lily's Santa Barbara at $195 is my first pick, IKEA's KAPPELAND at $71.99 is the white rattan bargain, and IKEA's LERAN in 60 cm is the large size for the money. Add a warm, frosted bulb, and dust the weave every month.
